How do you know if your e-mail is getting through?

Lois' earlier e-mail to the list brings up an interesting topic…

We all assume, if we send an e-mail and don't receive a reply, it's because we're being ignored.  The truth is, this is rarely the case.  In all likelihood, it's one of two reasons:

  • Your e-mail was blocked by my server or ISP
  • The response was blocked by your server or ISP

Obviously, this is not good.  Not getting e-mails from me, or vice-versa, is the least of your problems.  Because it probably means some of your e-mails to/from your customers and downline aren't getting through, either.

What can you do about it?  A few things:

1. Make sure you have disabled all spam filtering on BOTH your domain server (for example, GoDaddy) AND your ISP (whomever you're using to access the internet – for example, your cable company).  Depending on how you have your e-mail configured, either one could be blocking you.

2. Do NOT use a 'consumer' e-mail address for your business (for example, Yahoo, Hotmail, Verizon, Comcast).  No matter what you do, you'll never have total control over your filtering.

3. Don't rely on e-mails as the be all/end all.  If I send an e-mail, and I don't hear from someone in a reasonable period of time (say, three business days), I follow up with a phone call.  Remember… e-mails are NOT a replacement for phone calls!  They're not a replacement with your business colleagues and they're DEFINITELY not a replacement for calling your customers!

Never assume!  Especially when it comes to your customers!  Always follow up using another method.

Warmest regards,

John
